I loved it and I can't wait to get back to this world with the sequel. This book was so incredibly delightful. (*actual screaming* I just checked and the sequel is already out!!! Guess what I'm doing tonight!!!) Anyhow, this is going to be quick because I just want to read the next one. I loved 'Like Real People Do' for so many reasons, one of which is because it seems to be named after my favourite song by Hozier. I love the characters. LOVE. Alex is just precious and his tumblr tags do him justice, he truly is a dumpster fire child but he's also a child. I mean it constantly boggled my mind that he was nineteen and the captain of a professional NHL team (and FYI, this is actually not all that impossible because as it happens the youngest captain of an NHL team in reality ever was also a nineteen-year old). But, I feel like when we watch sports we kind of dissociate the players from their age because professional athletes tend to be on the younger side of their twenties especially when they first appear on the scene and if they are really good they might make pro in their teens. This is something completely normal for our world till you wait and start to think about their life outside the sport because all of a sudden you are faced with the fact that this pro-athlete is also a teenager struggling with all the identity issues teenagers struggle with and it was eye-opening even though it shouldn't be. I mean frankly after thinking about it, I'm amazed at how balanced Alex is despite his issues because he literally has A LOT OF PRESSURE on him but despite his anxiety and his inability to think before speaking, he is still, to use a tumble tag, a cinnamon roll. Eli is equally amazing. He is a figure skater suffering from a post-traumatic seizure disorder that seems to have postponed his Olympic dreams but this boy is so determined, I can't wait for him to reach his goal at some point. Also, my YOI loving heart is never getting over Eli. Alex and Eli are such teenagers but they are both so perfect for each other. It is amazing to read about them together and the author doesn't filch on their more domestic moments and literally my heart was so FULL! I also love the side characters and the plot. This story felt like fanfiction and that is literally the highest compliment I can pay it, given that it is actually original fiction. Also, I will never be over the moment in which Eli is stopping himself from reading an Alex/Eli fic. I loved it all! I can't wait to love it all over again!! Bei diesem Buch konnte ich einfach nicht widerstehen, weil sich der Klappentext so gut angehört hat. Genau nach meinem Geschmack. Ich musste es einfach lesen – und ich bin so froh, dass ich es getan habe. Dieses Buch ist ein Wohlfühlbuch durch und durch. Ich glaube nicht, dass ich bei einem Buch schon mal durchgängig am Grinsen war. Richtig peinlich verzückt, dümmlich am vor mich hin grinsen, sodass ich froh bin, dass ich das Buch nicht in der Öffentlichkeit gelesen habe. Es ist so unfassbar süß, dass man Karies davon bekommt. Dass man bis zum Ende einem Zuckerflash ausgesetzt ist. Und das auf eine durch und durch positive Weise, bei der einem ganz und gar nicht schlecht wird. Im Gegenteil. Man fühlt sich glücklich. Verliebt in die Geschichte und die bezaubernden Charaktere. Mir fällt kein besseres Wort ein als bezaubernd, denn das trifft es eigentlich perfekt. Vor allem Alex ist einfach nur bezaubernd, man möchte ihn wegen seiner ungeschickten, liebenswerten Art einfach nur in den Arm nehmen. Auf der einen Seite ist er extrovertiert und selbstbewusst, witzig und nicht auf den Mund gefallen. Auf der anderen kann er aber auch unsicher sein und sich in hinreißenden Monologen verlieren, in denen er unbewusst sein großes Herz und seine entzückenden Gedanken offenbart. Ich möchte auch einen Alex. Auch wenn es ganz klar Alex ist, der hier mein Herz erobert hat, mochte ich auch Eli sehr gerne. Er ist ebenfalls nicht auf den Mund gefallen, überraschend schlagfertig und lustig, intelligent und geduldig. Für Alex der perfekte Gegenpart, weil die beiden nicht nur sehr lieb und fürsorglich miteinander umgehen, sondern sich auch gegenseitig necken und so losgelöst miteinander umgehen können. Die Beziehung der beiden ist wirklich ein großes Highlight. Sie entsteht aus einer wunderbaren Freundschaft, die sich langsam aufbaut und bei der man von dem ersten Moment an spürt, dass hier eigentlich nichts freundschaftlich ist, sondern die ganze Zeit unterschwellige tiefere Gefühle unter der Oberfläche schlummern. Die Art, wie die beiden miteinander umgehen, wie liebevoll, verständnisvoll und ungewollt flirty sie zueinander sind, ist schlichtweg hinreißend. Es ist wirklich nicht gelogen, dass ich die ganze Zeit breit gegrinst habe. Wirklich. Die ganze Zeit. Es wird nie langweilig, sondern man freut sich stets auf das nächste Treffen der beiden, die nächste Unterhaltung, einfach die nächste Interaktion, die kein einziges Mal enttäuscht und immer wieder mit etwas Neuem, etwas unfassbar Süßem aufwartet, bei dem man auch als Leser*in Bauchkribbeln bekommt. Man fühlt sich wie verliebt, während man Zeuge wird, wie sich Alex und Eli verlieben. Besonders gut hat mir auch gefallen, dass hier der Fokus nicht auf dem Sexuellen liegt, sondern ganz klar auf den Gefühlen, die beim Lesen auf einen übergehen und die man sowohl Eli als auch Alex von Beginn an abkauft. Der Prozess des Verliebens ist hier so echt und süß dargestellt, dass man gar nicht genug davon bekommt. Das i-Tüpfelchen sind die wunderbaren Nebencharaktere, allen voran Jeff/Coops und Kuzy, die mich auch so oft zum Lachen gebracht haben. Ich liebe die Dynamik zwischen den vieren. Hach. Ganz viel Liebe für diesen Buchschatz! Fazit Ein neuer Favorit unter den Gay Romance-Büchern, der so so schön ist. Man fühlt sich beim Lesen leicht, glücklich und verliebt – dieses Buch verdient so viel mehr Aufmerksamkeit und ich hoffe so sehr, dass es noch auf Deutsch übersetzt wird, weil es eine größere Reichweite verdient hat.
