Falena (this_witch_reads_) 5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing Reviewed in India on 8 October 2025 This is a collection of 14 amazing short crime fiction stories written by 14 authors. I'm not a short story person, but this was phenomenal. All the stories are about 10-20 pages and each and every one of them kept me on edge. I couldn't put the book down, it was such a page turner and a narrative vortex. In a world of gory violent thrillers The Hachette book of Indian Crime Fiction showed how subtle thrillers can be impactful. The first story is about a guy named Manoj, who gets betrayed by the person he trusts the most. And this betrayal pushes him to seek revenge. The second story is about a scammer/phisher, who extorts people for his own gain and how his life changes once he meets the love of his life. All the 14 thrillers have really new and fresh themes. As an avid thriller reader, I was super impressed and happy with this book. Tarun K Saint has assembled the masters of crime in The Hachette Book of Indian Crime Fiction. Vaseem Khan, Meeti Shroff Shah, Madhulika Liddle, Arnab Ray to name a few. Some authors have used their stories for social commentary. Meeti shroff, in her story The Baraat writes: "She's consoling herself with what the arrival of the new daughter-in-law will mean. No waking up at five for the milkman. No tea and hot parathas ready at eight. No lunch tiffins packed before nine. She can palm it all off on the new bride. Isn't that the point of having a son? Besides, hasn't she done it all, ever since she stepped foot into her husbands house? Now, she tells herself, it is her turn to take it easy, to sit in the temple all morning with her friends, should she so wish." This was one of the most striking, well-written stories with perhaps the best twist I have seen in recent times. This twist is so organically worked into the story and yet it seems to jolt your bones right out of the grip of your musculature. Shroff Shah writes bitingly, commenting upon patriarchy, socio-cultural situation in Hindu weddings, perception of society, but this has been worked so fittingly into the story that it doesn't feel like added upon. Vaseem Khan's story is more about the tracing the origins of someone who is at the doorstep of becoming a criminal. A victim of a financial crime, a librarian decides to commit a murder. But whose? Well, I am not going to tell you everything here. Pick up the book to find out more. Madhulika Liddle's story takes a dig at that overzealous, self righteous, holier-than-thou organization that has grown in all metros: RWA. She comments upon the class difference casually commented upon and embedded in the society. RV Raman's story King Phisher traces the rise of a conman from Jamtara but I could guess it's end towards the end. Do pick it up this festive season.
