This Surya-siddhanta English translation provides a critical analysis of this foundational Hindu astronomy textbook. It examines the influence of Aryabhata, Brahmagupta’s Brahmasphuta Siddhanta, and the Khandakhadyaka on the text’s development and its astronomical calculations. A must-read for scholars of Indian astronomy.
Sourav Saha –
The Surya-siddhanta is a challenging read. The translation is helpful, but the astronomical concepts are complex. I appreciated the historical context, though it’s difficult at point to grasp. Requires serious dedication, but offers insights into ancient Hindu astronomy, wished to know more clearly about the date.
Simran Koli –
A fascinating, albeit dense, look at ancient Indian astronomy. While the “Surya-siddhanta” translation is fair, the subject is inherently complex. The historical discussion provided is valueable. I am still confused with some calculations. Worthwhile for those with a strong interest in the history of science!
Sanmohak Panda –
This book is a valuable resource, but not for the casual reader. The English translation definitely helps, but the mathematical and astronomical details are very dense. I found myself getting lost at times. Good historical overview, but needs patience! I am not sure, I understood everything.
Anand Shukla –
The Surya-Siddhanta is undeniably important for understanding Hindu astronomy’s history. The text is presented well, and the translation is appreciated. It’s very technical, and some prior knowledge would be extremely beneficial. I’m still processing some of the calculations, wish it had some example. But very fascinating.
