Description
Black Narcissus is a haunting exploration of faith, desire, and the clash between Western spirituality and Eastern sensuality. Set in a remote palace perched high in the Himalayas, the novel follows Sister Clodagh and her small group of Anglican nuns as they establish a convent and attempt to impose their rigid religious discipline on an untamed landscape steeped in ancient mystery.
As the nuns work to educate local children and convert the surrounding communities, they find themselves increasingly drawn into the palace’s seductive atmosphere. The exotic beauty of the mountains, combined with the presence of a charismatic British agent, begins to erode their devotion and self-control. Godden masterfully depicts the psychological unraveling of these isolated women as passion, jealousy, and suppressed desires bubble beneath their serene exteriors.
This atmospheric Gothic novel examines themes of repression, ambition, and the eternal struggle between the body and the spirit, making it a timeless classic of psychological tension.
